Chiropractors: What's Really Burning You Out? Take the Free 3-Minute Quiz

For chiropractic practice owners: 10 questions, about three minutes, and you'll know which of six archetypes describes where you are right now, plus one thing to do about it today. Not burned out, but feel like something's missing? There's an archetype for that too.

  • Which of the six archetypes most common to chiropractic practice owners fits you best, and the one right behind it.
  • Why the usual fixes, like seeing fewer patients, better software, hiring someone, or delegating more, help with some patterns but don’t get to what created them in the first place.
  • A one-page plan for your archetype, with one concrete action you can take today
  • The Two-Minute Reset: a short breathing practice for the stress you're either feeling crushed by or numb to right now

“I just feel stuck” covers five different problems.

It's the answer most chiropractic practice owners give when you ask what's wrong. It's honest. It's also so general that the usual fixes, a new EHR, an extra hire, a weekend off, never seem to touch it.

Burnout looks different depending on what's driving it. For some of us, it's the belief that everyone else's needs come first. For others, it's doing it all ourselves, needing it to be perfect, not knowing how to say no, or a quiet certainty that nothing will ever change. The fix that helps one can make another worse.

Identifying yours is the first step. It turns “everything is wrong” into one specific thing you can start on.

These archetypes come from my work on Selfless Syndrome, the struggle of servant leaders who take care of everyone but themselves. Chiropractors are servant leaders by nature. It's a big part of why we're so good at what we do, and why owning a practice can cost us so much.

And if you aren't burned out at all, but something still feels missing, there's a sixth archetype: the Plateaued Owner.

The six archetypes

The Martyr

You put everyone and everything in your practice first, because somewhere deep down you believe you don't matter.

The Controller

You do it all yourself, because it feels like no one else can do it as well as you.

The Perfectionist

You either do it perfectly or not at all, and you can't stop or ask for help.

The People-Pleaser

You don't know how to say no, so your schedule fills with everyone else's priorities.

The Resigned Owner

You've stopped believing anything about your practice will ever change.

The Plateaued Owner

Things are good, and something still feels missing. You're ready for what's next and can't yet see it.

Is this a clinical burnout test?

No. It's a reflection tool built from my work with chiropractic practice owners, not a clinical assessment or a diagnosis. It's meant to give you language for what you're feeling and one place to start.

How long does it take?

About three minutes. Ten questions, one at a time.
